Getting Your Car Ready for Summer Travel

Summer is here, vacations are being planned and weekend road trips will increase. If you will be relying on your vehicle more often in this change of seasons, you should be paying a little more attention to your car’s maintenance. Here are some simple tips that everyone can do to potentially head off problems.

  • If you have a “Check Engine” light on, take it to a chain auto parts store. Most will run a free diagnostic test and many times it will be something simple.
  • Take a good look at your tire-wear and check your tire pressure. Improper pressure can cost you fuel mileage.
  • Check all of your fluids. Check oil, transmission fluid, engine coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid.
  • Have a friend help you check all of your interior and exterior lights including brake and back-up lights.
  • Check your hoses to make sure they are firmly attached and show no signs of cracking or holes.
  • Take a look at your belts to make sure the edges aren’t fraying.
  • Check air and fuel filters. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to change.
  • If your brakes are making any squealing or grinding noises, have them looked at immediately. Putting off a brake inspection off can be very costly and dangerous.
  • Make sure your vehicle has at least a small first aid kit and a simple tool kit.
  • Even if you have GPS, a paper map can still be handy in an emergency.
