While you are bundling up in your favorite holiday sweater and warming your hands on a cup of hot cocoa, it is important to make sure that your holiday is not ruined by a fire at your home. Keep these fire safety tips in mind to ensure that your home and family stay safe throughout the season!

  • Check all of the smoke alarms throughout your home to ensure that they are working properly. Replace any alarms that are broken or outdated. Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home and outside of every bedroom to provide the right amount of protection.
  • Inspect every electrical decoration before you put it up. Throw away any decorations that have frayed or ruined ends. Also, make sure to check any extension cords before plugging them in.
  • Do not overload your outlets with decorations. Overloaded outlets can overheat and easily start an electrical fire in your home.
  • If you are purchasing a Christmas tree, make sure it is fresh. Keep the tree stand full of water to prevent the tree from getting dry.
  • Use battery-operated candles throughout your home to make it festive instead of real candles. If you do use real candles, make sure to keep them away from any flammable material, including furniture and curtains.
  • Unplug all decorations and lights before you go to bed at the end of the night to ensure they do not spark and cause a fire while you are in bed.
  • Keep all space heaters at least three feet away from any flammable material, including clothing, bedding, and curtains.
