Cyber Liability for Your Business

In today’s technological world, most of a company’s information and their client’s information is online.  This makes them more susceptible for a cyber- attack, which could cause hundreds or thousands of dollars to fix.  Something as simple as a lost or stolen laptop can leave all of your information vulnerable.  Once a cyber- thief gets ahold of all of the information, there is no way to get it back.  Protecting your company with the right cyber insurance can provide financial security.

There are many different options when it comes to choosing cyber-liability coverage,  including:

  • Network security liability – this covers any lawsuits that are filed against your company due to the inability of others to access data on your computers system after a data breach.
  • Network privacy liability – covers lawsuits that were filed based on allegations that your company was not able to protect sensitive data that was stored on your computer system.
  • Electronic media liability – covers your company against any lawsuits that were filed for acts such as slander, libel, defamation, invasion of privacy, or copyright infringement.
  • Loss or damage to electronic data – covers the loss of data that belonged to someone else that was stored on your computer that was caused by damage, theft, disruption, or corruption.
  • Loss of income and/or extra expenses – covers the income and extra expenses that were incurred to avoid or minimize a shutdown of your company after a failing computer system.
  • Notification costs – covers the cost of notifying anyone whose information was affected by the breach which is required by law.
  • Damage to your reputation – will pay for any marketing or public relations work to repair your reputation.

10 Tips to Throw the Best Summer BBQ

Summer is the perfect time to spend with friends and family and cook up a delicious meal on the grill.  To throw the best barbecue this summer, keep these 10 tips in mind:

  1. Pick a theme.  Select a theme and carry it through from the decorations to the food.
  2. Bring the entertainment.   While spending time with friends is fun, your barbecue will be an even bigger hit if you provide entertainment with a good sound system and classic backyard games.
  3. Think past the burger.  While hot dogs and burgers are great classic barbecue foods, make sure to expand and grill some seafood and vegetables.
  4. Keep it safe.  Keep in mind that barbecues have an open flame.  Make sure to take the proper safety precautions, such as keeping a fire extinguisher nearby when grilling.
  5. Let your meat be.  Moving your food around on the grill too much can interfere with the cooking process and the flavor.
  6. Let your meat sit.  Once your meat comes off the grill, give it time to sit.  Keep in mind that the meat will continue to cook after you take it off, so make sure to plan ahead and pull it off early.
  7. Choose your fuel.  Natural charcoal or wood chunks, such as apple, cherry, hickory, cedar, birch, or maple can all give food a distinct flavor.
  8. Start the day before.  While your guests may not be showing up for at least 24 hours, planning ahead and marinating your meat for at least 24 hours can give the food great flavor.
  9. Think about the drinks.  While you may like a margarita, some of your guests may prefer to have sparkling water or juice.  Make sure to have enough options for everyone.
  10. Do not be cheap.  The price of your food will be apparent in the flavor, so the cheaper you go, the less flavor your dish will have.

The Alliance Group encourages everyone to spend time with their loved ones around the grill this summer, and reminds you to contact them with all of your insurance coverage needs in New York.

Preparing for a Flood

Floods are one of the most destructive natural disasters. You can never know when a flood is going to happen, so it is important to be prepared at any time. Keep these flood safety tips in mind to be well prepared in the event of a flood.

During the flood:

  • Keep a battery-operated radio tuned to a local news station to stay up- to-date with emergency instructions in your area.
  • Move to a higher floor if you are caught inside by rising water.  Take warm clothing, water, a flashlight, and a radio with you.  Wait for help; do not try to swim to safety.
  • Avoid walking or driving through flooded areas.  As little as one foot of water can easily carry away a vehicle.
  • If you have time, turn off all utilities at the main power switch of your home and turn off the gas at the main valve.

After the flood:

  • Check for any structural damage before entering a building to make sure it is not in danger of collapsing.
  • Watch for electrical shorts or live wires before turning on the main power switch. Do not turn on any lights or electrical equipment until it gets checked by a professional.
  • Cover all broken windows and holes in the walls to prevent further damage to your home.
  • Throw out any food or medications that came into contact with the flood water.
  • Make sure to check with your local authorities before drinking any tap water to ensure it is not contaminated.

It is important to remember that homeowners insurance policies do not cover damage that is caused from a flood.  A specific flood insurance coverage needs to be purchased to be protected from a flood.  Contact the insurance professionals at The Alliance Group in Fairport, New York for the most comprehensive flood insurance policy.
